Why bother to learn Kanji when you can just use pictures ? In more and more restaurants today in Japan you can order food using portable electronic menus. The menu is an A4 touch screen device that sits on a charger on the table and can also be detached and hand held. It's quite a sturdy piece of electronics that looks like it can handle a few splashes of beer or yakiniku sauce. The screen has an easy to navigate user interface with pictures and various menus for you to touch and order. Onc...

"Adam and Joe Go Tokyo" is a pretty funny program on Tokyo and all things Japanese. In each episode they check out various things the city has to offer and interview some pretty big names. It does pedal the cliched stereotype of the Japanese being weird, wacky and gadget obsessed but it is pretty funny and well produced. Definitely worth a look at on Youtube. In this episode they examine the salaryman drinking experience. Of course, not all Japanese business men a...

Japanese TV on demand has been around for a while, at least in a limited sense with downloadable bulletins from NHK. All that changed last April with the launch of Gyao, a new free internet TV service which has everything from TV dramas to J pop to cooking shows and anime. This is great for anyone curious about modern Japanese culture and of course students of Japanese. Now you can see the good, the bad and the ugly of the Japanese mass media entertainment complex for better or for worse. Browsi
