Despite NATO's continued efforts, Taliban fighters have returned to roughly half of a strategic area they occupied in southern Afghanistan last year.

Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI, is helping the Taliban to pursue an insurgency in Afghanistan that has seen a 50 percent hike in attacks in some areas this year, according to the NATO commander Kabul.

The aid workers were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ghazni province. The Taliban said it would free the remaining seven South Korean hostages on Thursday. The Taliban agreed to release the Christian volunteers after South Korea reaffirmed its commitment to pulling its troops out of Afghanistan by the end of the year.

Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yousuf said the deadline had been set by the Taliban leadership council, headed by elusive leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, giving the threat added weight. The kidnappers killed the leader of the Korean group on Wednesday, but several further deadlines have passed without the rebels carrying out their threat to kill the remaining 22 hostages, who are mostly women.

The footage is said by the Taliban to have been shot in the Uruzgan Province during a campaign in June. Fighters were led by Senior Taliban Commander Mullah Dadullah, who is seen in the video firing weapons.

The Taliban has agreed to release the remaining 19 South Korean hostages, the South Korean government and the Taliban confirmed Tuesday.

Security officials say the Taliban's top operational chief in Afghanistan is dead. Afghan intelligence officials say Mullah Dadullah has been killed during a clash with troops. If confirmed his death would be a heavy blow for the Taliban.

A Taliban spokesman said the rest of the 23 South Korean hostages will be killed if the Afghan government fails to release any Taliban prisoners by a new deadline of 2030 GMT.
